Pastor Scott came to Holy Cross in September of 2001 right from finishing his studies at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. Pastor Scott grew up in the Twin Cities and went to Bethany Lutheran College and Mankato State University graduating with a B.A. in English Literature in 1991. He spent a few years in Taiwan serving as an English teacher at Concordia Middle School before entering the seminary.
In his “seminary years” he met and married beautiful Thao Nguyen Murn. Thao and Pastor Scott met at a Christian conference where Thao was sharing her testimony with a large crowd. Thao came to know the Lord in her young adult years and was baptized at St. Peter’s Vietnamese Lutheran Church in St. Louis. (It was Pastor Scott’s dream to meet his future wife at church or in a library!) Thao graduated from St. Louis University with a Masters Degree in Chemistry and works in medicinal research in Palo Alto.
Pastor Scott is in the process of finishing up a Masters degree in Communication Studies at San Jose State University, serves as an LWML pastoral counselor and is a vice-president on the Mt. Cross Outdoor ministries board.
Thao and Scott have two sons, Andrew Hieu (9) and Justin Scott (4 1/2). The hobbies they enjoy together are being outdoors, cooking, reading and photography. Pastor Scott’s two favorite T.V. shows are “Cash Cab” and “Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?” Thao’s favorite show is “Everybody Loves Raymond.” Andrew is a third grader at Carlton Elementary School and is an avid skateboarder and basketball player. Justin is entering Kindergarten soon and often rides his scooter and plays T-Ball. Both Andrew and Justin like to read, but also really enjoy watching the Disney Channel.
Pastor Scott and Thao hope and pray that people in the Santa Clara Valley could increasingly become interested in the life of the soul and come to know the Living Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. They have a heart for you to know the healing love of Jesus and welcome you to partner with them at what God is doing at and through the exciting ministry at Holy Cross.
Betsy Jenks was born in Oakes, North Dakota, and when she was one year old, her family moved to Minot, ND. She grew up attending St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where her dad was Pastor. After graduating from Minot High School, she attended Minot State University for 3 ½ years. She was working towards an Elementary Education degree when her dad took a call to Canoga Park Lutheran Church in Canoga Park, CA. Ever since she was little, Betsy’s dream was to live in California, so after much thought & reflection, she moved west with her parents. Rather than start school right away, she took some time off & worked for various insurance companies. It didn’t take long to realize that was not the right path for her. In 2003, she felt God’s call to become a DCE and enrolled at Concordia University, Irvine, CA. In May 2005, she graduated with a B.A. in Christian Education Leadership, and in June 2005, she started a year-long DCE internship at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. During the internship, the congregation voted to call Betsy as DCE once she finished her internship. She accepted the call and was commissioned & installed as DCE on June 4, 2006. It was a memorable day, especially with her father preaching at the service. She works with the youth, 5th grade through college age, and their families.
Betsy loves reading, playing piano, hanging out with friends, watching movies, going to Disneyland, and of course, spending time with the youth! She’s thankful to God for the many blessings in her life and for the wonderful opportunity to work with some of the Good Shepherd’s little lambs.
Karen was the co-founder of the School-age Program in 1990 and in 1992 she became the director. She has been a member of Holy Cross since 1976. Karen was a volunteer in Early Childhood Education in the public schools for five years. She was also a junior Girl Scout leader for five years and a cadet troop leader for one year.
Karen has worked with children within the church since 1972. She enjoys meeting the children whom God has created - as well as the families that belong to them. She loves to lead the children in worship and enjoys playing the guitar and singing praises to Jesus. Her hobbies include Bible study, stitchery, sewing, calligraphy, knitting and crocheting.
